Association
of Women Psychiatrists
A Voice for Women in
Psychiatry

Fall 2001
Dear Colleague:
Thank you for stopping by our website. Let me give you a little information about AWP. I hope you will
join us!
Why a separate organization for women?
Being organizationally separate gives us the
resources and the freedom to develop our own agenda. We mentor medical students,
residents and practicing psychiatrists at all stages of our careers. We give
awards to celebrate their accomplishments. We publish a directory so that we can
contact each other and refer those patients who request a female psychiatrist.
We publish an informative newsletter for Women in
Psychiatry. This year, we have
expanded considerable energy successfully organizing ourselves from a grassroots
to a solid, effective organization with a permanent staff.
At the same time, we work closely with APA. In order to
integrate our work, and to streamline your meeting-going life, we combined the
meetings of the APA Women's Caucus and the AWP at the Annual Meetings. We have
been able to organize meetings of women psychiatric leaders with the current
elected and staff leadership of the APA. We have established the first APA
award/lectureship to be named after a woman psychiatrist. We are the source of
important data about the status of women in our organization; it is we who have
followed representation of women on APA components and in elected positions. And
the picture does not look good; as in most professions, the numbers have not
kept pace with our presence and work in the field. Talented and accomplished
women are not always in the power network. The visibility and activity of AWP
keep these issues visible.
