Association of Women PsychiatristsAPA Election
AWP: What have you done to advance women’s involvement in organized psychiatry and specifically in the APA? Please tell us your specific accomplishments. Vergare: As an officer of the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society and Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society I strongly supported representation by women members. In the past two years I have had the pleasure of seeing two women colleagues become President of each organization. Six of ten annual awards this year from PPS will go to women. While chairing the APA Membership Committee I championed the modification of dues and policies to reflect the pressures specific to our women members. AWP: What important issues for women would you promote? How would you do this? Vergare: Women’s Issues: As Treasurer I would support APA efforts to advance research and education focused on biopsychosocial issues that vary by gender, culture and age. Career development opportunities are critical for our APA women members and should become a service of APA. AWP: What strategies would you use to promote the retention and recruitment of women in APA? Vergare: If elected Treasurer I will work to insure APA priorities reflect present and future interests of women. Full participation by women in governance, component/committee work and local district branch activity must grow to allow for better alignment of member/organization resources
